PATENT SOLD TO AIRBUS

Wide Body Aircraft

Bob Zider had worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in the Advanced Engines Group during the development of what would become the 747. Originally conceived as a military aircraft (which competition was won by Lockheed and Rolls Royce and became the C5A), Zider noted the main deck was designed for military cargo, not passengers. The hump on the 747 was to be above the nose which would open for tanks to enter. If designed as a passenger airframe, there would be two decks with different structural requirements which led to the patent.
